This site may not be pretty, but it offers up some free ideas and materials for making your own protest signs in support of Marriage Equality. There is no charge for any info or images on this site but donations are appreciated to help offset the costs of hosting all the graphic images!



Here you can download images of signs that you can have printed as 20x30 inch posters. Sam's Club and Walmart (and many other places that print digital photos) can print these out as 20x30 inch photos. The price is about $10-$13 each but with some of the sign designs it is the only way to go.

And of course you also have the option of using ideas from here and doing your own sign with markers on poster board, cardboard or whatever you have.

Making the posters:

It should be noted that if people can't quickly and easily read your sign, it is not effective. Don't put one of the longer messages on a small sign. For that matter, some of the longer messages are almost too long even for a large sign!

Putting it all together:

A very good backing for the posters (but not cheap - $2-3/sheet) is foam core. It's about a quarter inch thick and very light but at the same time, very stiff. It's much stiffer than poster board or card board. To attach mine to a stick, I used a drill to make holes through the posters and sticks and then passed twist-ties into the holes to hold the signs and sticks together - it also made it easy to them take apart later.

The stick you use for mounting your signs is best if flat - anywhere from 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch thick - an inch or a little more across. If you really want to be fancy, you can round the edges off with sandpaper, making it easier to hold. You want the stick to be flat because it is much easier to attach your sign and because the flat sticks support your sign better. Also a flat stick allows you to put a second sign on the back of the first one making your sign double-sided. Twice as many people can see your message or you could do two different messages.
